This course will teach you how to design and develop irrigation systems based on crop, soil, climatic data etc. This course forms part of the National Certificate in Plant Production NQF Level 4.

When you have completed this course, you will be able to:

SPECIFIC OUTCOME 1

Understand water legislation, advisability of irrigation and the hydrological cycle.

SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2

Understand the importance of soil water such as its forms, movement and availability to the plant as well as soil/water relations terms, drainage, tillage and units used.

SPECIFIC OUTCOME 3

The learner will be able to identify the importance of selection, soil requirements and recognition of suitable land for irrigation.

SPECIFIC OUTCOME 4

The learner will be able to understand scheduling irrigation systems and understand scheduling irrigation from climatic data and including Et/Eo ratios, root extraction depths, available moisture and methods of scheduling.

SPECIFIC OUTCOME 5

The learner will be able to understand and manage irrigation methods such as layout of schemes and spacing’s as well as overhead, flood, gated pipe and drip irrigation methods.

SPECIFIC OUTCOME 6

The learner will be able to implement and understand other considerations in irrigation scheduling which includes pumps, drainage and costs.
